The Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration program at the North Carolina Botanical Garden (NCBG), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, began in 2001. The program aims for each student not only to achieve botanical and artistic proficiency but also to develop a renewed appreciation for the natural beauty of plants. The first students graduated in 2005, and since then 68 students have completed the program. There are currently 94 students enrolled.

In 2022, NCBG launched a new 100% online program geared toward students new to art and interested in exploring various art media through a botanical lens. Participants of the Botanical Art Fundamentals Program explore the relationship between nature and art through beginning and intermediate art classes and introductory botany courses with a focus on plants native to the southeastern United States.

Students participating in both programs continue to honor the goals of NCBG to promote the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of plants. NCBG is grateful for the past contributions of Dot Wilbur-Brooks and Karen Wiley-Eberle in making these programs a reality. Find out more at ncbg.unc.edu/bai.
